A 6 week foundation course introducing the basic postures and techniques behind this dynamic form of yoga. BACKBENDING WORKSHOP

WEDNESDAY 6th and 13th MAY   6 – 7.30pm @ The Movement Studio

Backbending postures are important to balance out the many forward bends of the primary series, and when done successfully are strengthening, detoxifying and tremendously uplifting!!

Yet many students find them challenging and uncomfortable and tend to rush through them as quickly as possible.

Join me for two informal workshops exploring the dynamics of back bending.

Part 1 (Wed 6th)  Backbending with ease

We will look at ways to mobilize tight areas that might be restricting you
( shoulders, upper back, hip flexors), and how to develop a strong foundation to support your backbends.
Through various simple backbends we will learn the importance of correct alignment and use of the breath to find freedom in your spine.
We will integrate all of these elements to move towards achieving urdhva dhanurasana with minimal discomfort!

Part 2 (Wed 13th) Fearless Dropbacks

In this workshop we will build towards some more challenging postures, reaching back towards the floor from our knees and from standing.
From a solid foundation through our feet and legs we will learn how to open the front of the body and lift the heart centre to reach back safely, understanding how to use the breath to stay calm and overcome fear.
We will use the wall to help us, working towards assisted drop backs.
Both the workshops are suitable for every level of (regular!) practitioner, as there will be different options and modifications throughout.
£15 one workshop
£25 both workshops

ONE WEEK ASHTANGA INTENSIVE
with KPJAYI CERTIFIED TEACHER PHILIPPA ASHER

6th – 11th SEPTEMBER 2015
at MERCHANT CITY YOGA

Sunday Led Primary and Technique Workshop
10am-12pm, 2-4pm
5 Day ‘Traditional Ashtanga Guided Self Practice’ Intensive
6.30 – 8am / 8 – 9.30 am (2 sessions)

An opportunity to work closely and in a small group, with one of the few KPJAYI Certified Ashtanga teachers and advanced practitioners in the world.

Sunday will commence with everyone together, for a traditional Sanskrit-counted Primary class, followed by simple pranayama techniques. The afternoon workshop will focus on key features and concepts of the Ashtanga method, such as “tristhana”, correct alignment, technique, determination, discipline and dedication (to help make the impossible seem achievable). During Monday to Friday’s traditional Guided Self Practice, you will have the chance to deepen and develop your asana technique and practice, whilst being guided through methods of approaching the more challenging postures.
Groups are limited, so that Philippa can give optimum attention and assistance. Perfect for established practitioners of the Primary, Intermediate, Advanced A or B series, who are keen to devote a week to honing in on the subtleties of the traditional Ashtanga practice, whilst receiving guidance on how to develop the asanas that they are currently working on.

Philippa Asher

Philippa is one of a few Ashtanga yoga practitioners in the world, to receive Advanced Certification (awarded by the Krishna Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute), to teach through to the Advanced B Series.

From the late nineties, Philippa studied for three-to-six months a year at KPJAYI (learning under the guidance of revered guru, Sri K Pattabhi Jois). Since his passing, she regularly returns to Mysore, to continue her Ashtanga yoga study with Guruji’s grandson, Sharath.
After 25 years of learning and teaching several forms of dance at schools, universities and ballet companies all over the UK, Philippa accidentally chanced upon Ashtanga yoga. It was a life-changing incident, that made complete sense. For 12 years she practised daily before work (in the media, film and music industries) and spent numerous sabbaticals in India, studying at KPJAYI.
Philippa’s dedicated passion for Ashtanga yoga, background as a trained dancer and experience as a qualified teacher (Post Graduate Certificate in the Education of Adults), gives her an intuitive and sound understanding of bodies, yoga asanas, people and how they learn.
In 2006, Philippa established and ran Triyoga Soho’s Ashtanga Self Practice programme in London. She taught there for several years before moving to South India, to build her own shala (on a coffee estate in the Western Ghats). Ashtanga NIRVṚTA is a stunning homestay yoga retreat, which aims to bring Ashtanga yoga to all levels of practitioners, in nature.
As well as being the resident teacher at Ashtanga NIRVṚTA, Philippa regularly leads guest workshops at studios in India, Europe and on retreats worldwide. Her approach to sharing yoga asana (from beginners to more seasoned practitioners), is serious, yet light-hearted and joyful: with an emphasis on good technique, safe alignment and the synchronisation of tristhana (breath, gaze points and movement).
